Selling Apples: MSP, FPOs, and Direct Marketing

सेब बेचना: एमएसपी, एफपीओ और प्रत्यक्ष विपणन

HP apple farmers often get only 30–40% of the retail price. This guide breaks down the commission chain, explains FPO advantages, and shows three channels that can improve your net realisation.

The Commission Chain Problem

A Shimla apple retailing at ₹120/kg may have been bought from the farmer at ₹35–45/kg. Between them: the local commission agent (8%), the Delhi mandi commission agent (8%), transport, loading/unloading, and wastage each take a cut.

FPO Advantages

Farmer Producer Organisations aggregate produce and negotiate directly with large buyers (supermarkets, processors, exporters). FPO members typically receive 15–25% better prices. Himfed and HP Horticulture Department support FPO formation.

Direct Marketing Options

APMC bypass: sell directly to retailers, restaurants, or hotels in nearby cities. Many Shimla and Chandigarh hotels pay premium for traceable, orchard-direct apples. Online platforms like DeHaat and AgriBazaar connect farmers with urban buyers.

Cold Storage

Holding fruit for 4–8 weeks after harvest peak often yields 20–30% better prices. HP Horticulture Development Project subsidises private cold storage construction at 40% for registered farmers.
