Altitude Matters
Variety selection starts with altitude. Above 8,000 ft (2440m), only high-chill varieties perform well. At 6,000–8,000 ft, you have the widest choice. Below 6,000 ft, low-chill varieties like HRMN-99 are essential.
Red Delicious Group
Still dominates HP production. Starking Delicious, Red Chief, and Royal Red need 1,200+ chilling hours. Excellent shelf life but falling prices due to overproduction. Best above 7,000 ft.
Golden Delicious
Excellent for mid-altitude (6,000–8,000 ft). More disease resistant than Red Delicious. Market is improving as consumers shift preference. Pairs well with M9 rootstock for high-density planting.
Gala Group
Royal Gala and Brookfield are top choices for the premium market. Earlier harvest (August) avoids the September glut. High-density plantings yield 20–30 tonnes per hectare.
