HRMN-99: The Apple That Changed Hill Farming

एचआरएमएन-99: वह सेब जिसने पहाड़ी खेती बदल दी

HRMN-99 needs only 300 chilling hours and thrives below 6,000 ft — bringing apple cultivation to farmers previously shut out by insufficient chill. A complete grower's guide.

Why HRMN-99 Is Different

Developed at DRDO Pithoragarh, HRMN-99 was selected from the Bhutan-1 variety for its ability to fruit with minimal winter chilling. It bears large, red fruit comparable to Red Delicious in taste.

Suitable Altitude Range

Best between 1,500 and 5,500 ft. Planted across Bilaspur, Solan, and parts of Sirmour district. Some farmers are successfully growing it in the plains of Punjab with irrigation management.

Management Requirements

HRMN-99 is vigorous — it needs regular pruning to maintain an open canopy. Susceptible to woolly aphid; keep a monthly spray of Imidacloprid through spring. Fruit colour develops best with potassium sprays 4 weeks before harvest.

Market

Fetches premium at local markets due to its early ripening (July–August) when hill apples are not yet available. Export potential is growing with proper cold-chain logistics.
