Frost Damage Thresholds
Bud stage determines frost tolerance: Green Tip can tolerate -3.9°C; Pink Bud -2.8°C; Full Bloom -2.2°C; Petal Fall -1.7°C. As the season progresses, trees become more frost-sensitive.
Early Warning Signs
Watch for clear, calm nights with temperatures below 4°C by 10PM. These conditions promote radiative cooling — frost is likely by 4–6AM. Check the Baagicha app frost alert the evening before.
Protection Methods
Micro-sprinkler irrigation is the most effective method — water releases heat as it freezes and keeps buds just above 0°C. Smudge pots (burning oil/wood) raise air temperature by 1–2°C. Wind machines mix warm upper-air with cold surface air.
After Frost
Don't cut off seemingly dead blossoms immediately — wait 3–4 days to assess damage. Apply Potassium Nitrate foliar (0.5%) to help trees recover. Insurance claims must be filed within 7 days — photograph the damage.
