Why Thin?
Apple trees naturally set more fruit than they can carry to maturity. Excess fruit competes for carbohydrates, resulting in small, poorly coloured fruit. Thinning removes the competition.
When to Thin
Begin thinning 3–4 weeks after full bloom (petal fall + 21 days). By this time, the King fruit (largest in the cluster) has established dominance. The sooner you thin, the greater the size benefit.
How to Thin
Leave 1 fruit per cluster (the King fruit). Space clusters 15–20 cm apart. For high-density orchards on dwarfing rootstocks, leave 15–20 fruits per metre of branch.
Chemical Thinning
Sevin (Carbaryl) at 0.1% applied at 10mm fruit size removes 20–30% of the crop and is commonly used in HP. NAA (Naphthalene acetic acid) is more effective but must be applied within a narrow window.
