When and How to Prune Apple Trees in the Hills

Best Time to Prune
Prune during full dormancy — December to February in HP. Avoid pruning just before temperatures drop below -5°C, as fresh cuts are susceptible to frost damage.
What to Remove
Remove dead and diseased wood first. Then take out water shoots (vigorous upright growth). Remove branches that cross or crowd the centre. Aim for an open vase or central leader shape depending on rootstock.
Tools and Hygiene
Use sharp, clean secateurs for branches under 2cm. Use a pruning saw for larger branches. Dip blades in 10% bleach or 70% alcohol between trees to prevent fire blight transmission.
Wound Treatment
Paint large cuts (over 2cm) with Bordeaux paste or copper-based wound sealant. This prevents fungal entry and borers.
